Sure, we can all choose a red harness over a black one, but chalk bags are the one place as a climber we can show our real personality. As they say variety is the spice of life and you don’t just have to buy the first one you find in your local store. If you start searching the selection is vast. From the hard core sporty ones dangling from the serious athletes to the multi-coloured interesting and sometimes down right strange ones thrown to the floor by the bouldering walls each one gives us a glimpse of a different persona.
So, in the interests of making your life easy Crux Devotion has trawled through pages on the web and come up with some different places you can buy from and what we think are the most fun and interesting ones you can find on the market.
Charko Designs – http://www.charkodesigns.com If you are looking for something a little different that still looks and feels like your normal chalk bag then the ones available through Charko Designs are for you. Based in Spain they offer you hardwearing, ethically sourced products that work. I’m a real fan of the Cow and Comic designs.
KJ Bags – http://kendaljacksonbags.com/shop/ Made in the USA these chalk bags are produced by a family team. A small operation they offer a great range of bags to buy on their website as well as a custom made service. The on-trend patterns include owls and skulls (I’m about to put an order in for the owl version); if you’re the fashion conscious climber then this is a perfect for you. A small enough company for your bag to be unique and with a selection of cutting edge fabric patterns.
Cloven Hoof Studio – https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/ClovenHoofStudio?ref=l2-shopheader-name A company for the ones out there looking for something a completely different to the climber next to you. Cloven Hoof Studio offers a range of cute and fun designs that would make any budding climber happy; while the monkey and octopus are already on two of my friend’s wish list…
AllBeta – https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/AllBeta?page=1 Another USA made bag (California to be precise), I’m in love with the shark chalk bag available through the All Beta shop. The mouse and dino tale are also, frankly, awesome. Check out their website and you’ll see what I mean.
Crimp Chimps – https://www.etsy.com/shop/crimpchimps Started in 2010, after climber Jamie decided to turn one of her old stuffed toys into a climbing bag she offers a made to order service as well as ‘off the peg’. The company has remained small, although, you can find examples of her work across the world (check out her map). Email in and ask for a custom made quote or check out her just as impressive shop on Etsy.com.
If you’ve found a website that you think should be featured on our list then contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Happy shopping!
